CYA – Academics Mid-Year Reports

CYA Academic Mid-Year Reports

In the Community Youth Advance Mid Year Program evaluation reports, there are three guiding questions:

1) What evidence is there to suggest that the GoVirtual programs are having an impact on targeted student populations academic outcomes? 2) Does the GoVirtual program create a safe and nurturing learning environment for students? 3) Do students get to engage in a variety of activities that account for the various cultural, language, and learning style differences?

Here is what our external evaluator found:

What evidence is there to suggest that the GoVirtual programs are having an impact on targeted student populations academic outcomes?

  • On average, students who actively participated in CYA programs showed an increase in their math and science GPA.
  • Parents reported improvements in their student’s In-School Math grades, Reading grades, as well as in behavior and cooperation.

Does the GoVirtual program create a safe and nurturing learning environment for students?

  • CYA programs relate to participants in positive ways and appropriately respond to the individual needs of participants through the highly-qualified instructors who lead student learning in the GoVirtual program.
  • As CYA begins to roll out new VENTURE courses and opportunities for parent engagement in the second half (3rd trimester) of the academic year, we will have a stronger focus on recruiting CYA parents to be more active participants in their child’s learning, even virtually.

Do students get to engage in a variety of activities that account for the various cultural, language, and learning style differences?

  • CYA is increasing our communications focus in support of individuals whose first language is not English, especially those who may be interested in joining virtual activities but reluctant due to assumed language barriers.
  • Compared to previous responses from the 2019-20 academic year, there was a significant shift in external factors that parents listed as possible issues. For instance the majority of issues parents mentioned in the current academic year were related to digital learning the demographics of GoVirtual parents suggest these challenges may be made more complicated by family’s lack of income and limited English language proficiency.

This presents an opportunity for CYA to conduct further needs assessments among this vulnerable subpopulation of participants who are having difficulty understanding, navigating or accessing the digital learning content.
